National Day of Action on November 10 - Block OMB Proposal on Federal Grants

Posted By: Mary Alice Scott Advocacy + Government,

Local, state, and national organizations are invited to participate in a National Day of Action on November 10 to oppose a sweeping proposal from the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to overhaul and politicize federal grants. See a chart of the proposed changes here. On November 10, nonprofits should urge their Senators and Representatives - both Republican and Democrat - to permanently block OMB from finalizing the regulation and harming our communities.

3 Ways to Take Action

  1. Sign a national letter. The deadline to sign is November 11.
  2. Call or Email your Members of Congress. (See phone script below)
  3. Post on social media (sample posts and graphics below)

  • The White House’s proposal will make federal grants unpredictable and unreliable - a change that will increase the cost to build roads, bridges, schools, and other essential infrastructure. Tell Congress to block the proposal and stop higher costs!
  • The White House wants to politicize federal grants so that grantees are chosen based on partisan ideology, not community needs or congressional intent. Billions in federal resources are at risk! Urge your members of Congress to take action today!
  • Our constitution guarantees that the American people - through our representatives in Congress - decide how federal funds are spent. Now the White House is claiming the power to pick and choose which communities have access to federal investments. Tell Congress to block this harmful proposal!
  • The American people want decisions about federal grants to be made based on who can do the job best, not whether a grantee carries political favor with an administration. Tell Congress to block a proposal from the White House to dole out federal grants based on partisan ideology!
  • Federal resources should be distributed to communities in a nonpartisan way, based on merit, community needs, and congressional intent - not partisan politics. Urge Congress to take action today!
  • Our communities deserve their fair share of federal investments, but a new proposal from the White House would let the Administration to divvy up federal resources based on politics, not community needs. Urge Congress to take action today!

Hi, I am [name] and I am calling from [organization] located in [city, state]. I am calling to ask Representative/Senator [elected official’s name] to permanently block a sweeping proposal from the White House that would overhaul federal grantmaking.

The proposal would allow an administration to determine federal grants based on partisan ideology, rather than merit, community needs, and congressional intent.

The proposal would give unprecedented power to an administration to withhold, suspend, or terminate grants without notice and without cause, or to change terms and conditions mid-performance.

The proposal also targets federal grants that address racial, social, and economic disparities and facilitate equal opportunity for underserved communities.

Ultimately, the proposal will harm the people in [state] by jeopardizing their access to housing, community development, health, education, food, shelter, community services, disaster recovery, and more.

I ask Representative/Senator [elected official’s name] to act now to permanently block this harmful proposal.
