MANP Board of Directors Opens Nominations / Applications

Posted By: Jennifer Hutchins MANP News,

Help us shape the future of Maine's nonprofit sector!

MANP is pleased to announce that nominations and applications are now open for positions on our Board of Directors.

Since 1994, MANP has grown into the state’s largest network of organizations dedicated to the common good with more than 1,300 members of all sizes, located in every county in Maine, and representing a broad range of missions. We believe that by bringing people, ideas and resources together we will collectively be more strategic, creative, and courageous. As part of our commitment to equity, we are opening up our board nomination process to our network, with a goal of bringing new and different voices to the table.

If you or someone you know would be eager to contribute to the MANP board and help the organization to strengthen the leadership, voice and mission success of Maine’s nonprofits, we invite you to submit a nomination or application today.

Apply / Nominate by June 30

Why Be a MANP Board Member?

By joining the board team, you can:

  • Help shape MANP's work to strengthen the capacity, connections, and cross-sector influence of Maine nonprofits.
  • Build meaningful connections and relationships with the people powering Maine’s nonprofits.
  • Contribute your unique perspective and lived experience to a board culture that celebrates equity, accountability, courage, curiosity, collaboration and joy.

Who Should Apply?

We welcome nominations for and applications from individuals with a range of backgrounds, skills, and experiences. Board members should be prepared to attend four meetings per year and participate in one board committee.

Currently, we are especially seeking the nomination of:

  • Candidates who don’t see themselves as a typical board member and have never served on a board before. Maybe you are involved with small and rural nonprofits, or you hold a staff role other than Executive Director, or voices like yours aren’t typically represented in the boardroom. We would love for you to apply.
  • Candidates who have experience in the public sector, including municipal government, schools, emergency response, former elected officials, etc.
  • Candidates located in Maine outside of the Portland and Augusta metro areas.
  • Candidates who serve in a role related to funding Maine’ nonprofits, such as if you have a role in a community bank, a private foundation, or have experience in other roles of major funders of nonprofits
  • Candidates who are working with nonprofits that serve historically disadvantaged communities.

You can nominate yourself or someone else. All nominees should be in alignment with MANP’s vision, values, and equity commitment.

What Am I Committing to if Elected?

The general commitment of a MANP board member includes:

  • Bringing enthusiasm to their board role, with a willingness to participate to the best of their capabilities, and in alignment with MANP’s mission and values.
  • Serving at least one 3-year term, with two additional renewal terms being possible (up to 9 years).
  • Attending 4 board meetings per year. The board meetings are typically held in February, May, September and December. The usual time for the meeting is a weekday morning. However, the board is exploring different schedules to increase accessibility.
  • In-person board meeting attendance is encouraged for the in-person meetings (approximately half of the meetings), especially for the May overnight board meeting. In May, the board typically visits a member site and has a social event with travel and lodging reimbursable. For all meetings, a videoconference is usually available for those who cannot attend in person.
  • Serving on a board committee (typically just one). Committees meet about once per month for about an hour over videoconference. Committees set their own meeting schedule. Current committees: Advocacy, Finance, Governance, Membership, and Advancement.
  • Serving as an ambassador, advocate and advisor to the organization by attending events, building relationships and providing oversight and insight to the organization’s strategic direction, when possible.

Note: MANP board service is currently an unpaid/volunteer role, though expense reimbursements may be available in cases of financial hardship.
