Organization Overview

The Third Place is a Black-led nonprofit organization based in Maine that strengthens social, career, and economic infrastructure for Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC) across the state. Established in 2017, the organization cultivates “third places” — community spaces beyond home and work — where people can connect, collaborate, and create opportunities for shared growth and belonging.

Rooted in the belief that strong communities emerge from meaningful connection, The Third Place fosters cross-sector networks that span eleven fields through its SHIFT Maine initiative. These sectors — including STEM, Arts & Culture, Real Estate & Trades, Health & Wellness, and others — bring together professionals, entrepreneurs, and students to exchange knowledge, identify collective goals, and strengthen community capacity.
Through programs like the Maine Black Excellence Awards, Juneteenth Maine celebrations, and regional BIPOC Networking Events, The Third Place celebrates achievement, nurtures leadership, and builds visibility for underrepresented communities. Its work also includes developing creative and cultural infrastructure, such its BIPOC Arts Collective in Lewiston, a BIPOC-centered arts hub that supports inclusive creative expression and economic opportunity.

Guided by values of equity, collaboration, and community-led change, The Third Place operates with a vision of a Maine where BIPOC residents have full access to the resources, recognition, and relationships needed to thrive. By connecting people and possibilities, the organization builds the foundation for a more inclusive and sustainable future for all Mainers.
