Public Policy Work is Effective in Addressing Societal Needs

by Brenda Peluso

The National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP), has just released a report confirming the return on investment of nonprofit advocacy work. Strengthening Democracy, Increasing Opportunities: Impacts of Advocacy, Organizing and Civic Engagement in Minnesota is the third report in NCRP’s Strengthening Democracy Series and it highlights the work of 15 Minnesota nonprofits.  Between 2004 & 2008, these organizations leveraged $16.5 million in foundation funding into a $2.28 billion impact through their public policy & advocacy work.

Most notably, and probably the most useful information for those trying to gain foundation support for advocacy activities, is the cost-benefit breakdown presented in the report.  According to NCRP, the economic and social benefit impacts of advocacy outweighed the cost of organizing campaigns.

Lobbying is not only a legal, but effective way to meet mission.  Download the report and learn about your legal rights to lobby.
