Nonprofits Matter!

by Brenda Peluso

Scratch the surface of why people love Maine and you’ll find a strong network of nonprofit organizations delivering on their mission.  Maine’s nonprofits protect the environment, care for our most vulnerable citizens, support arts and culture, educate our children, develop community leaders, and sustain our spirit.  Therefore, no celebration of our country’s independence would be complete without a celebration of the role nonprofits play in our truly unique and robust civil society!

As French historian Alexis de Tocqueville wrote in his famous 1840 book, Democracy in America:

“Americans of all ages, all stations of life, and all types of disposition are forever forming associations… In democratic countries knowledge of how to combine is the mother of all other forms of knowledge; on its progress depends that of all the others.”

These nonprofit associations are central to the American experience and this month of July, we invite you to tell us why nonprofits matter to you.

As a membership organization of over 770 nonprofit organizations, I see first hand how nonprofits matter in our communities.  Just follow the links in our Member Directory or make it a habit to check out each month’s Featured Member and you can see what I am fortunate enough to see in my work life everyday.

Personally, nonprofits have mattered greatly to me and my family over the years:

Tell us why nonprofits matter to you!  Tell your friends and neighbors too.  Let’s make July #NonprofitsMatter Month!
