Nonprofit Day 2016! #NonprofitsGoodforME
What a great day we had in Augusta last week! There were 12 fantastic organizations from across the State that joined us in the Hall of Flags. A big thank you to:
- Alzheimers Association, Maine Chapter– Scarborough, ME
- Camp To Belong Maine– Auburn, ME
- Crisis and Counseling Centers– Augusta, ME
- Diversion Alert– Linneus, ME
- Girls on the Run– Portland, ME
- Kennebec Valley Community Action Program– Waterville, ME
- Maine Rural Partners– Farmington, ME
- Marine and Environmental Research Institute– Blue Hill, ME
- Midcoast Hunger Prevention Program– Brunswick, ME
- Milestone Foundation– Portland, ME
- OHI– Brewer, ME
- Rural Community Action Ministry– Leeds, ME
These exhibitors put together interesting AND informational table displays that communicated the importance of their missions. The day started early, with setup beginning at 8am and the Hall of Flags was quickly abuzz with legislative traffic. Despite the fact that it was a busy day in Augusta, it was clear that our exhibitors had laid the groundwork to strengthen their relationships with legislators. By using the tools provided, they were able to communicate effectively and further their missions through advocacy.
Around 1030 a.m., the bells started chiming and the House was in session. Exhibitors got a brief respite, but it wasn’t long before the Hall of Flags was filling up again. It just so happened that one of our member organizations, Maine People’s Alliance, was hosting a press conference that afternoon. This event attracted activists, lobbyists and legislators who all got a chance to check out the great work of our exhibiting organizations. After a long day, filled with networking and spreading awareness of the vital contributions nonprofits make to our economy, exhibitors packed up and headed home. Advocacy work is more than just a day, however, and many have reported that this event gave them the resources they needed to improve and advance their missions.
“Being chosen for Nonprofit Day at the State House has been a wonderful reintroduction of Maine Rural Partners work in the state. That and the outreach and preparatory meetings prior have been very educational.” – Robin Beck, Executive Director, Maine Rural Partners
