Session 2 is presented by Alicia Nichols from 12:15pm-3:00pm

Session 1: ANNUAL FUND DIRECT MAIL 101: MAXIMIZE GIVING BY MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR DATABASE

Are you using your database as the foundation for your development efforts? Come to this session of our day-long SkillBuilder to learn how databases are designed to help you fulfill your annual fund direct mail plan. We’ll look at some of the possible approaches for segmenting donors and mailing lists, and discuss potential challenges. Different databases vary in approach and capability. This workshop will provide general examples to illustrate the potential of good database software.

This SkillBuilder will include:

• Donor coding and list segmentation

• Challenges in tracking and mailing to households

• Personalizing Letters

Who Should Attend: Staff responsible for planning and implementing direct mail

Session 2:  ANNUAL FUND DIRECT MAIL 101: MAXIMIZE GIVING BY MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR MESSAGE

Do you send the same letter to everyone in your donor base?

Do your donors and prospective donors know what you expect them to give?

Do you have suggested giving levels?

Are you telling people a gift of $250 or $500 is the most you expect?

Your next annual fund direct mail piece is crucial to your ability to meet your fundraising goals. We will walk-through a “best practices” session for the annual appeal process, from beginning to end. Learn how to select the perfect message for your letter and ways to segment your donors to maximize the ask.

Optional: bring your most recent appeal letters with you to see how making some small adjustments will increase contributions.

This SkillBuilder will include:

• Key elements essential for a successful direct mail program

• Ways to perfect your annual appeal letters

• Creating a realistic 12 month appeal calendar
