Maine Department of Labor Hosts Educational Sessions About Employee Misclassification
Because the practice of employing individuals as “independent contractors” when legally they should be classified as “employees” (“employee misclassification”) is increasing nationally and in Maine, Governor Baldacci has signed an executive order establishing the Joint Enforcement Task Force on Employee Misclassification whose mission will be to coordinate the investigation and enforcement of employee misclassification matters.
As part of this effort, the Department of Labor is hosting three educational and listening sessions highlighting the myriad of issues, experiences and economic impacts employee misclassification has on our communities. The purpose of the sessions is for the Task Force to learn more about the problem of misclassification and hear suggestions for how to better address the problem. The Task Force also wants to provide information to the public about the problem of misclassification and what the Task Force is doing to confront the problem.
