Host Organizations for AmeriCorps Sought

by Brenda Peluso

The Emergency Response Corps has been in existence since 2003, serving Maine communities, nonprofits, disaster service organizations, and fire and EMS services through strengthening volunteer management, recruitment and retention systems, and providing necessary emergency and disaster responders.

Following the Essential Practices of Volunteer Management as a guide and receiving volunteer management training, AmeriCorps members are able to focus on key needs of the agency throughout the term in order to strengthen areas of volunteer management, public safety outreach and education, as well as emergency and disaster planning and response.  Members have enhanced volunteer recruitment and retention systems, created training plans for volunteers, and developed sustainable solutions to volunteer management after the presence of the AmeriCorps program.

The Emergency Response Corps has two options regarding partnering with AmeriCorps this year.  1) To host a full time stipended member between October 20, 2011 and September 20, 2012 to focus on volunteer management, recruitment and retention, and public safety/disaster planning and education and response.  This option requires a $9,800 cash match from the host organization which goes towards the member’s stipend, education award, health insurance, and training.  2) To host an Education Award Only member with a variable start/end date between October 20, 2011 and September 20, 2012 to provide volunteer service within a specified community need.  This option does not require any financial commitment, but will provide the member with an education award at the end of their service.  This may be someone already volunteering at the organization.  Both partnership opportunities will be filled on a first come first serve basis.

AmeriCorps Members have a unique ability to serve an organization with passion and motivation for service which permeates the projects that they are given at a Host Organization.  AmeriCorps members change the lives of volunteers and clients alike while partnering with key staff at the organization to impact capacity building areas of the agency.

To explore the possibilities with the Emergency Response Corps AmeriCorps Program, view the attached Request for Proposals for more information and contact Billye Senecal,, 207-491-4915.  Available positions will be filled on a rolling basis this fall as interest is communicated by organizations.  Organizations are encouraged to contact AmeriCorps staff before filling out the RFP to talk through the possibilities and receive assistance in the application process.

Our organization may be interested in an Intern for the summer of 2012 in Surry on the coast of Maine. The person would be interested in Organic Gardening and Meditation. (s)he would live in a rustic cabin on a beautiful piece of land a five minute walk from the beautiful bay with many preserves and a short bike ride from a small beach overlooking Acadia National Park mountains. This person would work in the gardens and be mentored by the gardener and a meditation teacher.

If this is of interest, more information is available.
