Ballot Inititatives & Letters to the Editor
I sent a letter to the PPH defending the right of nonprofits to participate in our democracy’s referenda process. The letter was in response to complaints that Portland’s Catholic Diocese, as a nonprofit, was somehow breaking the law by working on a People’s Veto Referendum of LD 1020 – An Act To End Discrimination in Civil Marriage and Affirm Religious Freedom.
To be perfectly clear, MANP does not support the message of the Catholic Diocese – we just support their right to make it.
This election season will be ripe with opportunities for your nonprofit organization to weigh in on a ballot initiative or two. Have no fear – it is perfectly legal within very understandable limits. For more information, you can attend one of our workshops this summer, or you can download our whitepaper on the subject, Raise Your Voice.
