Unemployment Insurance
The
Unemployment Services Trust (UST) is an unemployment cost savings
program that is owned and directed by its nationwide membership
of more than 2,100 nonprofit organizations. Through the
Trust, agencies directly reimburse the state only for the claims
of their former employees, rather than subsidizing larger, for-profit
companies by paying the state unemployment insurance tax. Participating
agencies are only responsible for their own claims, and own
their individual account balance, on which they earn interest.
Most 501(c)(3) organizations benefit from participation in
UST, particularly organizations with 10 or more employees. UST
members save 50% off their unemployment taxes during their first
two years of participation in the Trust, and a typical member
continues to save approximately 30%.
Distinct advantages:
- In the first two years of participation, organizations
get a guaranteed discounted contribution rate
- All unemployment claims are audited - any claim without
merit is challenged
- Free annual training seminars on employment law are offered
to members
- Liability is not pooled - UST members pay only the claims
incurred by their former employees

full spectrum of nonprofits.
