A. Executive Director Roundtable on Professional Sustainability
How can the ever-changing and always challenging Executive Director position be more sustainable?  In a room with peers, executive directors will explore professional sustainability and focus on their most pressing concerns – be it time, resources, the board, or an impending merger.  This session will allow executive directors to talk frankly with the support of colleagues and two consultants with over 50 years of nonprofit experience.  This session is for executive directors only and will be limited to 20 participants.  Moderators Carol Carriuolo and Deb Burwell are the principals of Paddling the Rapids, a statewide forum for nonprofit Executive Directors.

B. Leadership Change: Gaining Strength from a Transition
A change in leadership is a pivotal moment in the life of a nonprofit. How do you ensure change is for the better? With a carefully designed process, the departure of a leader is an opportunity to reflect on your organization’s vision, and to think critically and creatively about your current needs. Only then does the search for a new executive begin. Join moderators Jan Nelson & Sarah Nelson of  the Nelson Group Consulting, and panelists Karin Anderson, former Executive Director of the Maine Women’s Fund and Principal in the Dala Group, Erik Jorgensen, Executive Director of the Maine Humanities Council, and Deborah Walters, Board Chair of Safe Passages to hear your peers discuss ways to manage a leadership transition effectively.

C. The Benefits of Market Research
Members, donors and volunteers are among your most valuable stakeholders, as they provide critical support that allows your organization to meet mission related goals. Do you know what these key constituents really think about your organization? Do you know their interests and priorities? Come learn how two nonprofits effectively used market research in their strategic planning, fundraising and member recruitment efforts.  Join Market Decisions, a Maine market research firm; Shoshanna Hoose, Communications Coordinator of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine, and John Rainone, Executive Director of the York County Community College Foundation as they share their experiences.

D. Introduction to Online Giving
What approach should your organization take to raising money online?  What kinds of tools should you consider using and what kinds of results can you expect?  Join us for a brief overview of online giving tools and a best practices discussion.  This session will be presented by Tim Blair, the Founder and Managing Partner of Digital Goat Consulting Services, and will include a case study presented by Erin Rice, the Director of Marketing and Communications at Pine Tree Society, examining how they used online fundraising to support their campaign for the Accessible Treehouse Project.  Come and learn the most effective ways to incorporate technology into your fundraising strategies.

Session 2
1:30-2:45 P.M.

A. New Take on Nonprofit Boards
Why do our boards of directors still so often fall short of what we know they could be? Ironically, it may be because you are observing the so-called “best practices” promoted by apparently credible sources. This session, led by Nonprofit Quarterly Editor-in-Chief, Ruth McCambridge, will -- based upon the most current research and practice -- identify common problems and pose exciting alternative ways to think about improving your nonprofit’s governance and, in particular, its board of directors. Come with a notebook to record ideas!

B. Thinking about Collaborations, Mergers or Acquisitions? True Stories
Should your organization consider the options of high-impact collaboration, merger or acquisition? Through first-hand accounts, this session will openly explore the journeys that four organizations undertook to answer this timely, sometimes complicated, and important question. Join Tracy Michaud Stutzman, Executive Director of the Maine Crafts Association, Lynn Thompson, Special Projects Consultant for the Maine Crafts Association, Ruth Southworth, Executive Director of Broadreach Family and Community Services and Carole Martin, former Executive Director of Youthlinks, to gain their insight on their recent merger stories.

C. Nonprofit Primary Project
Just because endorsing candidates for public office is off limits for 501(c)(3) organizations doesn’t mean we can’t engage public officials in meaningful ways.  The Nonprofit Primary Project is a great example of how nonprofits can influence public conversations during highly visible campaign seasons.  Join Mary Ellen Jackson, Executive Director of the New Hampshire Center for Nonprofits and Anne McLane Kuster, Attorney at Law, Rath, Young and Pignatelli, P.C. as they share their experiences in implementing New Hampshire’s successful presidential primary project.

D. Case Studies in Effective Fundraising
Come prepared to be inspired by the success of your peers and to ask questions about innovative fundraising strategies. Join Tom Davis, Executive Director of SKILLS, Inc., Tim King, Executive Director of the Washington-Hancock Community Agency, Nan Cummings, Executive Director of Portland Trails, and Steve Bolton, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland as they share stories of winning capital campaigns, social enterprises, earned income ventures, and corporate sponsorships.

Session 3
3:00-4:15 P.M.

A. Managing Conflict with Power & Presence
It's not whether you have conflict in your life, it's what you do with it that makes the difference. This lively workshop, back by popular demand, employs the martial art aikido to explore resistance, connection, power, and transforming the energy of conflict into purposeful action. Join Judy Ringer, who provides conflict and communication training throughout the U.S. and Canada with workshops based on the martial art aikido and is the author of Unlikely Teachers: Finding the Hidden Gifts in Daily Conflict, for this unique session.

B. Coaching: A Tool for Leadership and Organization Development
What does coaching have to offer nonprofit organizations? What impact can coaching have on developing and sustaining effective leaders? Join Louise Franck Cyr, Principal of LifeDance Coaching and Nancy Lubin, Principal of Coach Associates, to learn a few key coaching skills that will help you create a culture of creativity, efficiency and productivity in your workplace. Nancy and Louise are co-authors of Dynamic Edge Coaching, a 2 day coaching skills training.

C. Partners in Prosperity: The Maine Nonprofit Sector Impact
Nonprofits impact communities. Nonprofits impact individuals. Nonprofits impact the economy. What are you doing to capture and communicate the impact your organization is having on a daily basis?  Could documenting your impact improve your ability to meet mission and expand your revenue base? Join the following nonprofit leaders who provided impact stories for MANP’s recent economic impact report, Partners in Prosperity, in exploring the most effective methods to present the impact of your organization’s work:  Mark Swann, executive director for the Preble Street; Betsy Biemann, executive director for the Maine Technology Institute; and Dave Perron, director of special services for Jobs for Maine’s Graduates.

D. Executive Director Roundtable on Professional Sustainability
