“Increasing Public Understanding of the Role of the Nonprofit Sector in Civil Society-Maine’s Nonprofit Congress Town Hall Meeting”

The United States is organized around the free market concept, so there is a wealth of common knowledge about the role and importance of the business community in our culture.  But the nonprofit sector is also a core part of our democratic tradition and less is known about it by the general public.

What does the public understand about the role of the nonprofit sector in civil society?  What is our responsibility in the creation of that understanding?  How would strong public understanding of the sector affect the environment in which nonprofits operate?  Join Ruth McCambridge, Editor-in-Chief of the Nonprofit Quarterly, as she discusses these issues and identifies promising practices that could positively impact public awareness and support for the sector.

This keynote session and facilitated Town Hall discussion will be Maine’s only opportunity for input into the 2008 Nonprofit Congress, a national movement empowering individuals and nonprofits to act collectively for positive change. The Congress has identified the lack of public understanding and support for the nonprofit sector as a barrier to positive change, and this session will provide Maine nonprofits the opportunity to participate in this national effort.

Ruth McCambridge transformed the Nonprofit Quarterly into a national journal in 1999. Her background includes 35 years of experience in nonprofits, primarily in organizations that mix grassroots community work with policy change. Beginning in the late 1990s McCambridge spent a decade at the Boston Foundation developing and implementing its diverse capacity building programs. She has spoken and published extensively on nonprofit management and governance.
