A Team Leadership Series
The governance and management of an organization converges in the two roles of the chief executive and the board chair, and most critically in the relationship between these two people. This leadership program is designed specifically for nonprofit board leaders and staff leaders to develop as a leadership team. It is comprised of one cohort of no more than 8 dyads/16 participants, seven sessions (5 of which will be long distance), and coaching support for an individualized project with each leadership team. The program will run from January – June 2008 with location to be determined by geographic convenience of participants.
This Team Leadership Series provides a learning opportunity for staff leaders and board leaders to explore ways to bring greater value to their respective organizations as a leadership team. It is customized to the unique needs, interests, and circumstances of each leadership team, mixing theory and practice that are tied to a real-life situations within each dyad’s organization. The program draws largely on participant experiences & lessons with structured discussions, readings and coaching.
Components:
- Two in-person sessions with all participants (cohort); commencement and conclusion
- A series of 5 conference call sessions – each focused on one of 5 core leadership competencies
- Leadership Team (dyad) project
- Coaching – Individualized coaching w/each leadership team (dyad)
Outcomes:
At the end of the program, participants will have
- A greater understanding of their own leadership qualities & styles
- Common understanding of the governance/management boundary
- A basic understanding of core leadership competencies
- An opportunity to explore and create effective strategies for managing and optimizing the staff leader/board leader partnership
- A plan for addressing a critical need w/in their respective organizations
Participant Prerequisites:
- High level of self-awareness/ability to be honest with oneself
- Trust - One’s own abilities & each other (within your respective dyads)
- Some comfort with ambiguity
- A staff leader and board leader willing to commit and participate as a team

Tuition:
- $1,000.00 per dyad (special rate for MANP members: $750.00)
- Two (2) in-person sessions (3 hrs each)
- Five (5) core competency sessions (conference calls – 1.5 hrs each)
- Coaching sessions – 2 hrs total for each leadership team

Trainer/Coach/Cohort Leader:
Tony Scucci is an organizational and clinical consultant in a private practice, based in Portland, Maine. He has resided in Maine since 1974.
In addition to more than 35 years of experience in human services in general, Tony served as the executive director of a nonprofit organization committed to strengthening families and preventing problems like child abuse and neglect. He has also served on many nonprofit Boards of Directors, and on various advisory panels and task forces.
Tony’s clients include individuals and organizations in the fields of nonprofit governance and management, mental health, child abuse and neglect, domestic violence, HIV/AIDS, parent education and support, Head Start and other pre-school programs, public & private schools, foundations, health care services, the arts, & social justice. These organizations range from relatively small operations to those that are national in scope and with multi-million dollar budgets.
Tony is a senior governance consultant with BoardSource (formerly the National Center for Nonprofit Boards), and has served in a coaching capacity with Prevent Child Abuse Amercia’s Leadership Initiative in conjunction with the Leader To Leader (formerly The Drucker Institute).
Tony graduated with a BA in Sociology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and with a Masters in Social Work from Boston College. He is a Licensed Master Social Worker in the state of Maine.
