Loon Echo Land Trust exists to preserve land of the northern Sebago Lakes region. These include water resources, plant and animal life, and scenic, agricultural, natural, recreational and historic sites.
The Trust's goal is to protect these natural resources for present and future generations and to work with landowners who want to establish such protection for their property. Loon Echo Land Trust serves Bridgton, Casco, Denmark, Harrison, Naples, Raymond, and Sebago, which are home to major ecological attributes, as well as recreational and forestry activities that are at risk due to development of open space.
Two primary tools are used to protect land: conservation easements, which are voluntary legal agreements between a landowner and land trust to permanently protect private land, and land purchases, where Loon Echo owns a property that is stewarded and enjoyed by the public. Today Loon Echo has 14 conservation easements and 6 preserves, totaling 3,107 acres.
The Trust is working on two major projects: Pondicherry Park, a 55-acre rustic nature park in downtown Bridgton and a 88-acre conservation easement containing unique wetland habitat the State of Maine is wishing to see protected.
