Humane Education logoThe Institute for Humane Education (IHE) was founded in 1996, by humane educators Zoe Weil and Rae Sikora, with the mission to train people to be comprehensive humane educators and to promote humane education worldwide. Humane education is an approach to teaching and learning that not only instills the desire and capacity to live with compassion, integrity, and wisdom, but also provides the knowledge and tools to put our values into action in meaningful, far-reaching ways. Humane education enables us to find solutions that work for all by approaching human rights, environmental preservation, and animal protection as interconnected and integral dimensions of a healthy, just society.

In 1997, IHE launched the first certification program in humane smiling kidseducation in the United States, and in 2000 affiliated with Cambridge College to offer a Master of Education degree program in Humane Education, also a first in the U.S. Since its inception, IHE has been offering its Sowing Seeds Humane Education training workshops throughout the U.S. and Canada; these are now offered 6-10 times a year. Last year, IHE began offering MOGO (Most Good) Workshops which help people of all walks of life find the inspiration and guidance to live according to their deepest values.

IHE has become a recognized leader in humane education, drawing students, trainees and supporters from around the world. IHE faculty and staff speak at numerous conferences and events, and Zoe Weil, IHE’s President, continues to write books and articles introducing comprehensive humane education to teachers, educational reformers, activists, and changemakers all over the globe.
