GrowSmart Maine is a fast-growing non-partisan citizens group
based in Yarmouth , that is promoting sustainable prosperity
and quality places in Maine . The organization was formed three
years ago by people around the state who are deeply concerned
about how Maine is growing and changing. It is comprised of
business people, conservationists and environmentalists, sportsmen,
planners, builders, elected officials and local active citizens
from across the state.
By bringing people together across political and geographic
divides, the group has put itself in the center of a debate
over Maine 's future. It is the sponsor of the recently-released
Brookings Report " Charting Maine's Future" ,
an ambitious study and action plan that is helping to reshape
the political debate in Maine . Brookings' believes that Maine
is poised for an era of prosperity, if we take bold action now
to invest in what matters. Those investments include protecting
Maine 's quality of place, which is our calling card in the
modern world, and nurturing our fledging innovation jobs sector.
Growsmart Maine has a multi-year-plan to see that Brookings'
advice is translated into state policy and is organizing citizens
and coalitions around the state. In its three-year existence,
GrowSmart has sponsored annual summits, a model town project
and the Brookings report. It operates out of a brick mill building
on the banks of the Royal River in Yarmouth .
GrowSmart's vision of Maine is a state that retains its wild
places, farms, fishing villages and neighborly small towns while
it unleashes the innovation that drives modern economies.
