Birth Roots is devoted to removing obstacles to perinatal health by offering a continuity of community support, resources and education before, during and after the birth of a child.
Birth Roots is an independent perinatal resource center located at 101 State Street in Portland where families find classes, drop-in groups, connections and resources from pre-conception through postpartum.
Classes: Our innovative “Bridge Package” of childbirth education offers a unique grouping of classes that takes a family from pregnancy
through postpartum with childbirth education classes and then Blossoming Newborns, our postpartum series for moms and babies. We know that becoming a parent is about more than the physical process of birth so our classes touch on all aspects of this transition.
Drop-In Groups: Birth Roots currently hosts 3 drop-in groups each week where new parents can come together to socialize, problem solve with peers and simply to get out of the house. A volunteer from the Breastfeeding Center of Maine is available at our Thursday group to answer questions or make referrals about breastfeeding questions.
Resources: Birth Roots can help families connect with community resources from finding a obstetrician to hiring a doula to finding the right sling online, in person or with our Annual Perinatal Resource Guide.
Doula Connections: Birth Alliance hosts a Doula Tea every month for families interested in learning about and meeting birth and postpartum doulas. For those looking to become a doula, Birth Roots hosts 2 doula trainings a year.
