Keynote: Doris Buffett
Maine philanthropist Doris Buffett will discuss her personal and philanthropic commitment to changing lives and increasing opportunities for the working poor and families in crisis. As founder and president of The Sunshine Lady Foundation, Doris Buffett has awarded over $80 million in grants through the foundation that Worth magazine described as "uniquely hands-on, folksy, a person-to-person enterprise-the un-foundation." Through a unique network of trusted volunteers, Sunbeams, as well as through the personal involvement of staff and board members, The Sunshine Lady Foundation seeks organizations run by passionate, hardworking boards. The foundation also operates several college scholarship programs, the largest of which is available nationally for survivors of domestic violence. In addition, The Sunshine Lady Foundation has built Boys and Girls Clubs, domestic violence shelters, surgical units for a Maine hospital, and respite facilities for disabled children and adults. The most recent large project undertaken is the construction of a pre school, Educare Central Maine. Among its accomplishments, The Sunshine Lady Foundation also operates and funds over a dozen college degree programs for maximum security prisons from Sing Sing to San Quentin. In addition to her philanthropy, Doris Buffett has been a first grade teacher, domestic violence crusader, political activist, mother and grandmother. She now resides in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Rockport, Maine.
